The Yurok Tribe Building and Construction Ordinance was reviewed by the Yurok Tribe Culture Committee. Additionally, the Yurok Tribe Cultural Department consulted several elders and completed a historic record search on the issue. Traditionally, each individual village would regulate any new building construction within the village. Yurok law was governed by each village via a Tolth, Headman or Chieftain. No village or Village Leader would dictate or govern another village. The Yurok Tribe Building and Construction Ordinance does not follow this traditional law in that the Yurok Tribal Government would be enforcing law onto individual villages. It is the opinion of the Yurok Tribe Culture Department that the Yurok Tribe Building and Construction Ordinance does speak to traditional law in that the Yurok Tribe should not allow any outside governing body to have jurisdiction over its own land or members.
