The Pesticide and GEO Education Committee was established pursuant to the genetically engineered organism ordinance, with representatives from, but not limited to: YTEP, YDPS, Tribal Court, OTA, Tribal fisheries, and cultural programs. This Education Committee shall meet regularly and make recommendations to the Tribal Council regarding:

(a) Educating the Yurok Tribal community about the harmful effects of pesticides;

(b) Tribal policies and legislation to regulate and reduce pesticides use on the Reservation and to develop an integrated pest management plan to include viable alternatives and safest pest eradication methods and resources, including working with existing pest management companies to be in compliance with this chapter;

(c) Educating the Yurok Tribal community about the harmful environmental and health effects of genetically engineered organisms; and

(d) The viability of labeling and/or restricting the sale, promotion, or provision of genetically engineered food products within the Yurok Tribal territory (in consultation with the Yurok Economic Development Corporation).

Commentary: This Committee was originally named the “Chemical Pesticide and GEO Education Committee” in the genetically engineered organism ordinance. The name is updated in this chapter to remove the word “Chemical” as not all pesticides would be considered chemical.
